Mirtazapine (Remeron) at One Stop Psychiatry

Mirtazapine, sold as Remeron, is an antidepressant taken once a day at bedtime. It can make people sleepy and hungrier, which some people find helpful and others don’t, so it’s worth talking through. Our providers see patients in Fort Lauderdale or by video anywhere in Florida.

What Is Mirtazapine?

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that comes as a regular tablet or a tablet that dissolves on your tongue. It’s taken once a day at bedtime, with or without food. For the dissolving tablet, use dry hands, put it on your tongue right after you take it out of the pack, and don’t split it. You don’t need water.

What Is Mirtazapine Used For?

Mirtazapine is used to treat depression. Full benefit can take several weeks or longer, so it’s normal not to feel the whole effect right away.

Is Mirtazapine Right for Me?

Your provider will go over your symptoms, your sleep and appetite, your other medications and supplements, and your health history, including glaucoma, seizures, heart problems and pregnancy. For kids and teens, your provider decides whether it’s appropriate.

Getting Started With Mirtazapine

Call (754) 270-6322 or request an appointment online. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Our staff will call you back to check your insurance, send your intake forms and confirm when and where your visit is.

At the first visit, your provider goes over your symptoms, your history, what you’ve already tried and what you’re taking now. You can come to our Fort Lauderdale office or use video from anywhere in Florida.

If Mirtazapine makes sense for you, you’ll hear how to take it, what to expect in the first few weeks and which side effects to call about. If it doesn’t, your provider will talk through other options. Follow-up visits are where the dose gets fine-tuned.

Side Effects of Mirtazapine

The most common are drowsiness, dizziness and a bigger appetite with weight gain. Tell your provider if these bother you.

Get medical help right away for signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat or mouth sores; fever, sweating, confusion, a fast heartbeat or severe muscle stiffness (possible serotonin syndrome); chest pain; unusual bleeding or bruising; seizures; or an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling or trouble breathing.

Important Safety Information

  • Mirtazapine may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in children, teens and young adults under 24, especially in the first few months and after a dose increase. Call your provider right away about any change in mood or behavior.
  • It can trigger angle-closure glaucoma. Ask about an eye exam before you start, and get urgent care for eye pain, vision changes or eye redness or swelling.
  • Don’t take it with an MAO inhibitor or within 2 weeks of stopping one without talking to your provider.
  • Don’t stop suddenly. Avoid alcohol, and don’t drive until you know how it affects you.

Common Questions

Why is mirtazapine taken at bedtime?

It often causes drowsiness, so taking it at night lets that happen while you sleep.

Will mirtazapine make me gain weight?

Increased appetite and weight gain are common side effects. Your provider can talk with you about this before you start and at follow-ups.

How long until it works?

Full benefit can take several weeks or longer. Keep taking it as prescribed and check in at your follow-up visits.

Can mirtazapine be prescribed by video?

Yes, after an evaluation, as long as you’re in Florida during the visit and your provider decides it’s appropriate.

Insurance and Cost

We take Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Optum, and we have sliding-scale rates if you’re paying yourself. We check your coverage before the visit. The price of the medication itself depends on your pharmacy and plan. More on insurance.

We see patients from age 6, and same-day visits are often possible. Several of our providers and staff speak Spanish. Request an appointment or call (754) 270-6322.

We aren’t an emergency service. If you’re thinking about suicide or you’re in crisis, call or text 988. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
