Sertraline (Zoloft) at One Stop Psychiatry

Sertraline, sold as Zoloft, is one of the most common antidepressants out there. It’s used for depression, OCD, panic attacks, PTSD and more. If you’re wondering whether it could help you, or you already take it and need someone to manage it, that’s what we do. You’ll see one of our psychiatric providers in Fort Lauderdale or by video anywhere in Florida.

What Is Sertraline?

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a type of antidepressant. It is taken by mouth once a day, as a tablet or a liquid concentrate that is mixed with a drink before taking. The brand name is Zoloft. Improvement usually builds over several weeks, and your provider adjusts the plan based on how you respond.

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Sertraline is used to treat:

Is Sertraline Right for Me?

Your provider will ask about your symptoms, past treatments, other medications and supplements, and medical conditions. They will also ask about pregnancy or breastfeeding and any history of bipolar disorder, seizures, bleeding problems or glaucoma. For children and teens, your provider reviews whether sertraline is appropriate.

Getting Started With Sertraline

Call (754) 270-6322 or request an appointment online. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Our staff will call you back to check your insurance, send your intake forms and confirm when and where your visit is.

At the first visit, your provider goes over your symptoms, your history, what you’ve already tried and what you’re taking now. You can come to our Fort Lauderdale office or use video from anywhere in Florida.

If Sertraline makes sense for you, you’ll hear how to take it, what to expect in the first few weeks and which side effects to call about. If it doesn’t, your provider will talk through other options. Follow-up visits are where the dose gets fine-tuned.

Side Effects of Sertraline

Common side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, loss of appetite, shaking, excessive sweating and sexual side effects. Tell your provider if side effects are severe or do not go away.

Get medical help right away for seizures; unusual bleeding or bruising; rash, hives or trouble breathing; or agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, confusion, fast heartbeat, severe muscle stiffness or loss of coordination, which can be signs of serotonin syndrome.

Important Safety Information

  • Antidepressants such as sertraline may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in children, teens and young adults under 24, especially in the first few months and after a dose change. Contact your provider right away about new or worsening depression, anxiety, agitation or thoughts of self-harm.
  • Sertraline can cause angle-closure glaucoma. Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision changes or redness or swelling around the eye.
  • Do not take sertraline with an MAO inhibitor; your provider will explain the required time between them.
  • Do not stop sertraline suddenly; your provider will tell you how to stop safely.

Common Questions

How long does sertraline take to work?

Some people notice changes within a few weeks; full benefit can take longer. Your provider reviews progress at follow-up visits.

Can sertraline be prescribed through telehealth?

Yes, after an evaluation, if you are in Florida during your visit and your provider decides it is appropriate.

Can I switch to sertraline from another antidepressant?

Possibly. Switching needs a plan from your provider, because some medications must be stopped gradually or need a gap before another is started.

Is sertraline used for children?

We see patients age 6 and older. For children and teens, your provider reviews whether sertraline is appropriate.

Does insurance cover visits?

Coverage depends on your plan. Our staff verify your insurance before your appointment, and sliding-scale self-pay rates are available.

Insurance and Cost

We take Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Optum, and we have sliding-scale rates if you’re paying yourself. We check your coverage before the visit. The price of the medication itself depends on your pharmacy and plan. More on insurance.

We see patients from age 6, and same-day visits are often possible. Several of our providers and staff speak Spanish. Request an appointment or call (754) 270-6322.

We aren’t an emergency service. If you’re thinking about suicide or you’re in crisis, call or text 988. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
