Bupropion (Wellbutrin) at One Stop Psychiatry

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant, but it isn’t an SSRI. It works differently from drugs like Zoloft and Lexapro, which is one reason people ask about it. Our providers can tell you whether it fits your situation and keep an eye on how it’s going. Come to our Fort Lauderdale office or meet by video from anywhere in Florida.

What Is Bupropion?

Bupropion is an antidepressant taken by mouth as a regular, sustained-release (SR) or extended-release (XL) tablet, one or more times a day depending on the form. Brand names include Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL.

What Is Bupropion Used For?

  • Depression
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
  • Helping people stop smoking

It is also sometimes used for depression in people with bipolar disorder and for ADHD. Your provider explains whether these uses apply to you.

Is Bupropion Right for Me?

Your provider reviews your symptoms, other medications and medical history, including any history of seizures, eating disorders, heavy alcohol use, head injury or high blood pressure, and pregnancy. For children and teens, your provider reviews whether bupropion is appropriate.

Getting Started With Bupropion

Call (754) 270-6322 or request an appointment online. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Our staff will call you back to check your insurance, send your intake forms and confirm when and where your visit is.

At the first visit, your provider goes over your symptoms, your history, what you’ve already tried and what you’re taking now. You can come to our Fort Lauderdale office or use video from anywhere in Florida.

If Bupropion makes sense for you, you’ll hear how to take it, what to expect in the first few weeks and which side effects to call about. If it doesn’t, your provider will talk through other options. Follow-up visits are where the dose gets fine-tuned.

Side Effects of Bupropion

Common side effects can include anxiety or agitation, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, dizziness and headache.

Get medical help right away for a seizure; confusion or hallucinations; a fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat; greatly increased energy, racing thoughts or reckless behavior; or fever with rash, hives, swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Important Safety Information

  • Bupropion may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in children, teens and young adults under 24, especially in the first months or after a dose increase. Contact your provider right away about mood or behavior changes.
  • Bupropion can cause seizures; your provider reviews your seizure risk before prescribing.
  • Take it exactly as prescribed and do not take extra doses.

Common Questions

Is Wellbutrin an SSRI?

No. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is not an SSRI. It works on two other brain chemicals, norepinephrine and dopamine, and is often described as an NDRI. Because it works differently, it is less likely than SSRIs to cause sexual side effects or weight gain.

Is Wellbutrin a stimulant?

No. Bupropion is an antidepressant, not a stimulant or a controlled substance. Some people do feel more energetic on it, and it can cause trouble sleeping or jitteriness, especially early on.

How long does Wellbutrin take to work?

Some people notice better energy, sleep or appetite in the first one to two weeks. The full effect on mood usually takes several weeks. Your provider will check in at follow-up visits before deciding whether to change anything.

What is the difference between Wellbutrin SR and XL?

They release the medication over different lengths of time, so they are taken a different number of times per day. Your provider chooses the form that fits you.

Can bupropion help me quit smoking?

Bupropion is used to help people stop smoking. Your provider can discuss whether it is appropriate for you.

Can bupropion be prescribed through telehealth?

Yes, after an evaluation, if you are in Florida during your visit and your provider decides it is appropriate.

Does insurance cover visits?

Coverage depends on your plan. Staff verify your insurance before your visit, and sliding-scale self-pay rates are available.

Insurance and Cost

We take Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Optum, and we have sliding-scale rates if you’re paying yourself. We check your coverage before the visit. The price of the medication itself depends on your pharmacy and plan. More on insurance.

We see patients from age 6, and same-day visits are often possible. Several of our providers and staff speak Spanish. Request an appointment or call (754) 270-6322.

We aren’t an emergency service. If you’re thinking about suicide or you’re in crisis, call or text 988. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
