Qelbree (Viloxazine) at One Stop Psychiatry

Qelbree is a non-stimulant ADHD medicine taken once a day. It’s approved for children 6 and older and for adults, so it can be an option for families who’d rather avoid a stimulant, or for people who didn’t do well on one.

Because it isn’t a stimulant, Qelbree can be started and followed by video anywhere in Florida, as well as at our Fort Lauderdale office. Your provider decides if it’s a good fit.

What Is Qelbree?

Qelbree is the brand name for extended-release viloxazine. It’s a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, which means it raises levels of norepinephrine, a brain chemical involved in attention and self-control. It isn’t a stimulant, and the FDA label doesn’t list it as a controlled substance.

It’s a capsule taken once a day, with or without food. Swallow it whole. If swallowing is hard, the capsule can be opened and sprinkled on a spoonful of applesauce or pudding, then swallowed without chewing: within 2 hours for applesauce or 15 minutes for pudding. Your provider usually starts low and raises the dose after at least a week.

What Is Qelbree Used For?

ADHD in adults and children 6 years and older. It can be part of a bigger plan that includes counseling and school support.

Is Qelbree Right for Me?

Your provider will ask about any personal or family history of depression, bipolar disorder or suicide, plus high blood pressure, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, and pregnancy. They’ll also go over every medicine you take, since some can’t be combined with Qelbree. Your heart rate and blood pressure get checked before you start and along the way.

Getting Started With Qelbree

Call (754) 270-6322 or request an appointment online. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Our staff will call you back to check your insurance, send your intake forms and confirm when and where your visit is.

At the first visit, your provider goes over your symptoms, your history, what you’ve already tried and what you’re taking now. You can come to our Fort Lauderdale office or use video from anywhere in Florida.

If Qelbree makes sense for you, you’ll hear how to take it, what to expect in the first few weeks and which side effects to call about. If it doesn’t, your provider will talk through other options. Follow-up visits are where the dose gets fine-tuned.

Side Effects of Qelbree

In children and teens, the most common are sleepiness, less appetite, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping and irritability. In adults, the most common are trouble sleeping, headache, sleepiness, tiredness, nausea, less appetite, dry mouth and constipation.

Call your provider right away about new or worse depression, thoughts of self-harm, panic attacks, agitation, aggression, acting on dangerous impulses, or a big jump in energy and talking. Those can be signs of a serious mood change.

Important Safety Information

  • Qelbree has a boxed warning: in studies, children and teens with ADHD who took it had more suicidal thoughts and behaviors than those who didn’t. Watch closely in the first weeks and after any dose change, and ask teachers and family to tell you about changes.
  • It can raise heart rate and blood pressure.
  • In people with bipolar disorder, it can trigger mania or a mixed episode.
  • Don’t take it with an MAO inhibitor, or within 14 days of stopping one. It also can’t be taken with certain medicines, including duloxetine, ramelteon, tizanidine, theophylline, alosetron and tasimelteon.
  • It can cause sleepiness, so don’t drive until you know how it affects you.
  • If you become pregnant, tell your provider. Animal studies suggest possible harm, and you’ll decide together whether to continue.

Common Questions

Is Qelbree a stimulant?

No. It’s a non-stimulant ADHD medicine that works on norepinephrine.

Can Qelbree be prescribed by video?

Yes. Because it isn’t a stimulant, it can be started and managed by video while you’re in Florida, if your provider decides it’s appropriate.

How long does Qelbree take to work?

It isn’t instant like a stimulant. Your provider will check in over the first weeks as the dose is adjusted.

Can my child take Qelbree?

It’s approved for children 6 and older. A parent or guardian takes part in every visit and decision.

Does insurance cover the visits?

That depends on your plan. We check your coverage before the visit, and we have sliding-scale rates if you’re paying yourself.

We take Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Optum, and we have sliding-scale rates if you’re paying yourself.
