Same-day visits are often possible
See us in our Fort Lauderdale office or by video anywhere in Florida. We take Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and most major insurance plans. Se habla español.
Uzedy is a long-acting form of risperidone that goes just under the skin instead of into a muscle. Depending on your plan, you get it once a month or once every 2 months.
We give Uzedy at our Fort Lauderdale office for adults with schizophrenia and for ongoing treatment of bipolar I disorder.
What Is Uzedy?
Uzedy contains risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic that’s been used as a daily pill for many years. It changes the activity of certain natural chemicals in the brain. Uzedy releases risperidone slowly from a small deposit under the skin.
What It’s Used For
- Schizophrenia in adults
- Ongoing (maintenance) treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults, which the FDA added in October 2025
How the Shot Is Given
If you’ve never taken risperidone, you’ll take it by mouth first to make sure you tolerate it. Once you’re stable on daily risperidone, you get your first Uzedy shot the day after your last pill. No extra pills or loading shots are needed.
The shot goes under the skin of the belly or upper arm. It’s given by one of our medical providers, once a month or every 2 months. Never more often than planned.
Is It Right for Me?
Your provider will ask about heart disease, stroke, seizures, low white blood cell counts, diabetes, cholesterol, kidney or liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, trouble swallowing and pregnancy. Mention cimetidine, ranitidine or St. John’s wort if you take them.
Side Effects
Common ones include stiff or shaky muscles, restlessness, sleepiness, dizziness, weight gain, constipation, dry mouth or extra saliva, and an itchy spot or small lump where the shot went in. Risperidone can also cause breast changes or missed periods.
Call us right away or get emergency care if you have:
- Fever, sweating, stiff muscles, confusion or a fast heartbeat
- Movements of the face or body you can’t control
- Tightness in the neck or throat, or trouble swallowing
- Signs of high blood sugar like extreme thirst or blurred vision
- A seizure, fainting or falling
- An erection that lasts for hours
- Rash, swelling or trouble breathing
Important Safety Information
Antipsychotic medicines, including this one, raise the risk of death in older adults who have dementia-related psychosis. It isn’t approved to treat that.
It can make you drowsy or dizzy, especially just after a shot. If that happens, lie down until it passes. Don’t drive until you know how it affects you, and skip alcohol.
If You Miss a Shot
Call us and we’ll get you in as soon as possible.

1. Reach out
Call (754) 270-6322 or request an appointment online. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you already get this shot somewhere else and need a new place to keep it going, tell us when your next one is due so we can try to see you in time.
2. We check your coverage
Our staff verify your insurance, send your intake packet and confirm the time of your visit. Some plans require prior authorization before they’ll cover an injection. Our staff send your insurance company the information it asks for, but the insurance company makes the final decision on coverage.
3. Evaluation

4. Your injection visits
Shots are given by our medical providers at our office at 3015 N Ocean Blvd, Ste C101, Fort Lauderdale. Between shots, many check-ins can happen by video if you’re in Florida.
